Chris Lebeau<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Collection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sanny has taken six designs by the artist Chris Lebeau\u202f(1878\u20131945) into production again since acquiring the exclusive rights from his grandson in 2001. The six designs are:\u202fButterfly<\/strong> (1905), Peacock<\/strong> (1908), Apple\u202f<\/strong>(1910), Tomato\u202f<\/strong>(1926), Refraction\u202f<\/strong>(1932) and the coloured tablecloth\u202fMargotje\u202f<\/strong>(1930). This is the first time that these designs have been woven again and, as then, in the finest-quality 100% pure linen damask. I like to imagine that Chris Lebeau\u202flooks down from heaven and approves of what I am doing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Triumph in table decoration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Between 1905 and 1939, the versatile artist Chris Lebeau created at least 57 designs for linen damask for the then leading linen manufacturer E.J.F. van Dissel & Zonen in Eindhoven. No other designer in the Netherlands has so many table linen designs to his name. His design process was unique in that he created a separate design for the tablecloth and napkins by combining the basic motif differently in each piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lebeau was often inspired by nature.\u202fArt critics of the time were full of praise, and his table linen designs were regarded as \u2018triumphs in table decoration\u2019, with Lebeau table linen considered an absolute must<\/strong> for every well-to-do, modern housewife. In 1932, he created a surprising series of damask that seemed to anticipate the later Op Art, one of which was Refraction. Lebeau\u2019s damask is still highly popular with people who like to treat their guests to a beautifully laid table.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n

Butterfly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Butterfly<\/strong> was the first design to be created by Chris Lebeau for the damask weavers Van Dissel. It is stylish and monumental, yet friendly and suitable both for classic and modern interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 100 years later, the design has lost none of its attractiveness. The butterflies in the borders welcome your guests to your home, with groups of four butterflies placed at intervals along the table. It is a wonderfully summery design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Apple<\/strong> design is rounder and more elegant. The motifs in the border and centre patterns flow smoothly into one another, creating an almost completely filled arrangement.

Take a closer look at the clever solution for the corner design and you see the mark of a true master. It is in the corners that the patterns following the length and width of the tablecloth come together harmoniously.

Lebeau designed different variations of the same basic patterns for the tablecloth and the dinner and breakfast napkins.

In 2002, King Willem-Alexander\u202fand Queen M\u00e1xima<\/strong>\u202fof the Netherlands received a set of Apple<\/strong> damask table linen as a wedding gift from the editors and readers of the magazine Vorsten Royale<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomato<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tomato<\/strong> is a particularly restful design, with small, regularly-spaced motifs on the centre of the tablecloth. It is especially popular with people who prefer a simpler table linen. The border motif shows long rows of ripe tomatoes with pretty leaves that gently continue on their way around the corners of the tablecloth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n

Peacock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Peacock<\/strong> belongs in the countryside, where stately peacocks roam the estate. Along the edges, the peacocks show off their beautiful feathers, and the motif is repeated on the top of the table. The peacock feathers, with their beautiful eyes set off in elegant circles, will please every guest at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 26 June 2019, King Willem-Alexander\u202fand Queen M\u00e1xima\u202fof the Netherlands received a set of Peacock<\/strong> damask table linen from the Mayor and aldermen of Wassenaar to commemorate their years at the De Horsten Royal Estate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Refraction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Refraction<\/strong> steals many hearts. This Art Deco design gives a table an air of beauty and magnificence. From the smooth, clean centre line of the tablecloth, hundreds of small squares fan out in increasingly large semicircles towards the edges of the tablecloth. It could be 1960s Op Art!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, Refraction<\/strong> was designed over 30 years earlier by Lebeau, in 1930. Lebeau was years ahead of his time, as art critic Plasschaert wrote in 1966 after visiting an exhibition of Lebeau\u2019s artwork in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. We have now reconstructed Refraction for weaving again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refraction<\/strong> is also beautiful in colour and is available in sunny yellow, lavender blue, silver grey or the natural, unbleached colour of linen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanny de Zoete is co-author of the book Artistiek damast van Brabantse bodem 1900\u20131960<\/a> (Dutch Artistic damask from Brabant, 1900\u20131960), which includes the damask created by Chris Lebeau and other designers. This book is now only available second-hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
